One of the things I have noticed with living in Michigan is that the fans here are extremely loyal to their teams. While other places come down extremely hard on their teams if they perform poorly, demand the coach be fired, refuse to go to games, etc., people from Michigan generally will come up with some kind of positive spin on how it will get better or that the coach hasn't had enough time or whatnot.
I really have to give the sports fans here props, because they really are optimistic and will continue to go and support their teams, no matter what and the theory there is when the team finally does get successful again, it is all the sweeter.
But I will say that this comes with a price. While other places are psychotically hardcore and go over the top with "Fire the coach" stuff anytime they have a bad season, people here are WAY too forgiving. And the results speak for themselves. Pick your sport right now. People still go and don't make a lot of waves against their franchises, so why in the world would an owner or organization see any urgency to improve?
I am not saying that every team that tries hard to win is successful. Look at Dan Snyder and the Washington Redskins (yes, I said it). He really wants to win and spends some money, or at least has, but it doesn't always translate to success either.
I am also not saying you have to be like SEC fans and look to fire the coach anytime you have two seasons where you aren't winning most of your games in a row.
But fans here, in my humblest of opinions, are way too accepting of mediocrity or worse. There is a fine line of course. Mainly, I feel sorry for a lot of the sports fans here--they deserve much better than their teams give them. But this accepting attitude probably isn't going to change anytime soon. It is engrained in the subculture here.
